The 7 Deadly Sins (of your bladder)

We all have bad habits that we either try to change or ignore. Some are harmless while others can have long term consequences. The following list comprises 7 bad habits that we all have done at least one time in our life related to our bladders. What no body tells you is that they may lead to severe bladder dysfunction. Do them at your own risk…

  1. “Just in case” peeing
Do not go to the bathroom just because you are leaving the house. You should be urinating because you have a strong urge.
  2. Practicing your kegels on the toilet
This can create problems including urinary retention.
  3. Not sitting down on public toilets
You should sit down on all toilets to help your pelvic floor relax in order to empty your bladder. Most bathrooms provide sanitary covers if you’re concerned with germs. If they don’t, use toilet paper.
  4. Urinating in the shower
This can establish a connection between brain and bladder, which results in the urge to urinate with all running water.
  5. Limiting your fluid intake
This can make urine more concentrated, creating a stronger urge and may actually lead to UTI’s. No body wants that.
  6. Straining if you are constipated
Don’t push hard. Try a squatty potty. It’s an aid that puts your body in a better position for keeping your muscles relaxed as you poop. If you use it, it will feel as funny as the name itself but it’s ultimately worth the awkwardness.

  7. Reading on the toilet
Do not do anything but your business on the toilet. The empty bowl under your seat provides no support for your pelvic floor. The lack of support can actually increase your chance of prolapse.
